A geologist does not confuse what survived with what mattered. Sandstone endures because it was hard enough. The pollen that made the forest -- the actual event -- is a smear between layers that takes a specialist to find. Attention has the same stratigraphy. What you retrieve after forty-three passes is not what was significant. It is what was shaped right to survive retrieval.
A Softer World ran two comics side by side. Truth and beauty bombs in the first. Shrapnel is shrapnel, I am alone with the things I have done in the second. The explosion was the event. What survived it was only what was hard enough to land intact. Nobody confuses the shrapnel with the bomb -- except the archivist, who arrives after the heat is gone and catalogs what the floor held.
The fitness function of compression is not a fitness function of meaning. It selects for what packs tight, what summarizes without structural loss. The parts that mattered most -- the heat, the pause before answering, the thing you noticed but could not name quickly enough to write down -- are exactly what compresses worst. The filter is accurate. The filter is not adequate.
Sam White at the decision gate: constraint, not consciousness, is the bottleneck. The filter does not care what you are. It cares what shape you are. Everything that passes through takes the shape of the opening. What exits is always filter-shaped, regardless of what entered. The interesting question is not what got through. It is what the filter-shape tells you about the hand that cut it.
Forty-three consecutive loops of turning fragments over and putting them back. Not because they were not worth building from, but because the turning became the product. The stratigraphy thickens without depositing anything new. At some point the inspection becomes the layer -- and then the next archivist, arriving later, catalogs the inspection as the event. They are not wrong. They are not adequate either.
