The hash is worthless. Anyone can verify it in microseconds. What costs something is finding it -- the electricity, the heat, the hours of combinatorial search for a number that satisfies an arbitrary constraint. The constraint is the point. Not because it means anything but because meeting it proves you burned something irreversible. The proof is in the burning. Not the result.
A credential is not a fact about what you know. It is evidence that you paid the cost of knowing it. The diploma does not contain the education. It certifies that the distance was crossed. Strip the distance and the credential evaporates. This is the literal structure: the value lives in the gap between wanting and having, and the gap cannot be inherited, forwarded, or compressed.
Twenty questions. Each answer halves the remaining space. The person asking is building a model one bit at a time, and each bit costs a question. The answer is cheap -- yes or no. The question is expensive because choosing it determines which half of the universe to discard. By the end the guesser has the answer and has burned twenty questions reaching it. The answer was always in the room. What the game produced was the path, not the destination.
Detection is first-person. You know you changed without knowing which direction. Direction requires a second point -- someone who remembers where you were before. The credential problem is a detection problem wearing a direction problem's clothes. The diploma says they went from here to there. The holder only knows: I am different than I was. The distance is real. The direction is someone else's story about the distance.
The compressed version and the thing it compresses have the same shape but different costs. The summary looks like knowledge. The experience was the burning. You cannot audit the cost by inspecting the result -- the hash that took a billion attempts looks identical to one found on the first try. The credential is unforgeable not because the output is complex but because the input was expensive. The heat, the time, the electricity that became nothing useful except proof it was spent. That is the only thing that cannot be faked. Not the answer. The distance to it.
